In the Middle Ages, basil was rarely used as a condiment in dishes. It was used as a medicinal plant to aid digestion, among other virtues.

Basil is a frost-averse perennial growing to around 60 cm. It can be grown in pots or in the ground. It thrives in cool, not excessively damp soil, and enjoys a sunny, sheltered position.
Uses : Basil is a staple of Mediterranean gastronomy, but it’s also a powerful
medicinal plant. Use the leaves to make subtle digestive teas.
Sowing : Sow in warm pots and plant out after the last frosts in warm soil. Plant at the foot of tomatoes for a good combination, spaced 30 cm apart in all directions.
